Cable Woodchop
The cable woodchop trains rotational core power by pulling a cable diagonally across the body from high to low or low to high. It mimics athletic twisting movements and builds functional oblique strength.
How to Perform
Set the cable to the highest or lowest pulley position depending on chop direction.
Stand sideways to the cable with feet shoulder-width apart and a slight knee bend.
Rotate your torso to pull the handle diagonally across your body, keeping arms mostly straight.
Control the return to the starting position — do not let the cable yank you back.
Pivot on your back foot to allow a full range of rotation without stressing your knees.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Pulling with the arms instead of rotating through the core — the arms should stay relatively fixed.
Standing too close to the cable, which reduces the rotational range of motion.
Using too much weight and losing control on the eccentric, which reduces oblique time under tension.
